We all have numerous styles of upholstered chairs at home including favorite wing chairs, delicate slipper or Louis and Parson styles. Interior trends come and go but the aforementioned types of chairs are always in. Let’s look at some ways we can decorate with upholstered chairs and easily update them with new fabric.

Louis style chairs are a furniture classic. Whether you prefer the curved, cabriole legs or straight, classical lines, Louis XV and XVI style chairs effortlessly make themselves at home in any decor.

Shorter arms and padded seats make for comfortable and stylish options; pulled up as extra seating around a dining table, as a pair in formal rooms or as an entry way chair.

We recommend 3-4 yards of fabric per chair based on no pattern repeat. For larger patterns, add an extra 1/2-1 yard per chair. Try a velvet fabric or traditional damask pattern.

Louis Style Arm Chairs

The upholstered Parson chair was designed in 1930’s Paris at the eponymous design school.

The unassuming armless chair is typically used in dining areas and is another great option for blending with existing decor.

An unskirted style offers a more contemporary look while skirted parson chairs can be upholstered both with a skirt or skirted slipcover.

We recommend 3 yards of fabric for unskirted styles and 5 yards for skirted and slipcovered chairs. Popular choices include cotton duck or linen fabric.

Try a stain-resistant performance fabric in eating areas. Fabrics from Crypton are a customer favorite.

Parsons Chairs

In the 1600’s, wing chairs came into fashion, finding themselves in a cozy spot; fireside. The high wings protected against blustering fireplace heat and the cushioned seating (originally all wood!) provided a comfortable place to linger. Shown is the classic wing chair upholstered in Lilly Pulitzer’s Well-Connected and accented with nailhead trim. The bold pattern and delicately outlined details turn this chair into a show-stopper.

We recommend 7-9 yards of fabric for wing chairs.
